Kolhan fuel crisis spirals: NH-33 corridor faces acute shortage as pumps run dry

Jamshedpur: A deepening fuel crisis has gripped the Kolhan region, severely disrupting life and transport along the vital Tata–Ranchi stretch of National Highway 33.

With petrol and diesel supplies dwindling rapidly, large sections of the corridor are witnessing near-paralysis, triggering panic among commuters and straining the region’s already fragile supply chain.

In Jamshedpur, several fuel stations across key localities such as Sakchi, Parsudih, and Karandih have either shut operations or are functioning under extreme constraints after exhausting their reserves.

The few pumps still dispensing fuel have imposed strict rationing, limiting supply per vehicle in a desperate attempt to manage shrinking stocks.

The result: long, snaking queues, rising tempers, and growing anxiety among motorists.
At the heart of the crisis lies a combination of policy changes and logistical bottlenecks.

The situation has been further aggravated by an acute shortage of fuel tankers, severely choking supply lines.

Where daily deliveries were once routine, many petrol pumps are now waiting several days—sometimes up to a week—for fresh consignments.

This disruption has sharply widened the gap between demand and supply.

The impact, however, has not been uniform. Outlets operated by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited have been among the worst hit, while those linked to Indian Oil Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum, particularly with access to dedicated tanker fleets, have managed to sustain limited operations.

With Kolhan’s daily fuel consumption estimated at around 300,000 litres each of petrol and diesel, the fallout has been significant. Goods movement along NH-33 has slowed, affecting supply chains and local businesses, while daily commuters continue to face uncertainty and delays.

Fuel dealers have warned that unless immediate steps are taken to ease financial constraints and restore logistical efficiency, the crisis could worsen.

The unfolding situation highlights the delicate balance between policy decisions and ground realities, with urgent intervention now essential to restore normalcy.
