Jamshedpur: The first phase of Census 2027 commenced today, April 1 in East Singhbhum district, marking a significant shift towards a technology-driven and citizen-friendly enumeration process. Authorities have introduced an online self-enumeration system, enabling residents to submit their details from home.
District Census Officer-cum-DCLR, Sachchidanand Mahto, said extensive preparations have been made to ensure smooth execution. Around 4,000 enumerators including teachers, anganwadi workers, sahiyas and other government personnel—have been deployed after proper training for door-to-door surveys.
The first phase, known as “house listing,” involves collecting data on housing conditions, family composition and access to basic amenities. A total of 33 questions will be asked, covering aspects such as water supply, electricity, sanitation, internet access and economic status.
The data will help assess living standards and infrastructure availability. In a major digital initiative, the Government of India has launched a self-enumeration portal available in 16 languages, allowing citizens to directly input their information.
Officials said the second phase will focus on individual-level details, including age, education and other socio-economic indicators. It is noteworthy that the Census, originally scheduled for 2021, was deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2027 exercise now integrates digital tools to enhance accuracy, transparency and efficiency. As per the 2011 Census, East Singhbhum had a population of approximately 1.35 million, with 55% urban and 45% rural residents.
The literacy rate stood at around 84 %, with a sex ratio of 949 females per 1,000 males. The administration has urged citizens to actively participate and provide accurate information to support effective planning and implementation of development programmes.
