Jharkhand braces for windy, stormy days ahead

Jamshedpur: A spell of pre-monsoon activity is set to bring relief from the rising heat across Jharkhand, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) likely at isolated places till March 21. While most parts of the state will experience changing weather conditions, north-western regions may see comparatively lesser impact initially.

The evolving weather pattern is being influenced by a western disturbance active in the middle and upper atmospheric levels, along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas. In addition, a strong subtropical westerly jet stream over eastern India is enhancing atmospheric instability, creating favourable conditions for thunderstorm development.

Weather experts at the IMD Regional Met Centre in Alipore, Kolkata indicate that convective activity will primarily build up during the afternoon and evening hours, leading to sudden thunderstorms, lightning strikes and short spells of rain.

Wind speeds during these events may reach up to 50 kmph, posing risks to temporary structures, trees and outdoor movement. Light to moderate rainfall has already been recorded at isolated locations, and similar activity is expected to continue over the next few days.

This weather shift is likely to bring down maximum temperatures slightly while increasing humidity levels, resulting in relatively more comfortable but sticky conditions. Among major cities, Daltonganj recorded the highest maximum temperature at 36.8°C, followed by Jamshedpur at 34.1°C.

Ranchi and Bokaro reported 32.2°C, indicating a gradual variation across regions. A marginal dip in daytime temperatures is expected as cloud cover increases.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially in open areas, and avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning.

Residents across the state are already experiencing the shift. “The heat was getting intense over the past few days, but the sudden cloud cover and winds have made evenings much more pleasant,” said Amit Verma, a resident of Bokaro.

“In the afternoons it still feels warm, but the thunderstorms bring a sudden coolness. We just have to be careful about lightning,” said Pooja Das, a homemaker in Jamshedpur.

With fluctuating weather conditions likely to persist, Jharkhand is expected to witness a mix of heat, clouds and intermittent rain over the coming days, marking a typical transition phase before the peak summer sets in.
