Deoghar. In a continued crackdown against cyber crime, Deoghar police arrested two cyber fraudsters from the Purni Karhaiya forest area under Sarath police station on February 10, 2026. The action was taken on the direction of Superintendent of Police Saurabh and under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Raja Kumar Mitra.According to police sources, confidential information was received that some youths were operating from the forest area and cheating people by posing as fake customer care executives of Flipkart, Amazon, Airtel Payment Bank and other companies.
Acting on the tip-off, a police team conducted a raid and apprehended two suspects from the spot.Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused uploaded fake mobile numbers on Google in the name of customer care services. When unsuspecting customers contacted these numbers for assistance, they were lured with promises of cashback or problem resolution and then duped. The accused allegedly asked victims to create PhonePe or Paytm gift cards in the name of cashback offers and later redeemed those cards themselves.
Police further stated that the accused also impersonated officials of Airtel Payment Bank. They misled customers by claiming that their cards had been blocked and offered help to reactivate them through the Airtel Thanks app, thereby gaining access to sensitive information and committing fraud. In some cases, they also sent fake links in the name of PM Kisan Yojana, SBI credit card services and loan approvals to extract bank details from victims.
The arrested persons have been identified as Suman Kumar Das, about 19 years old, a resident of Kharbajori under Sarath police station, and Ajit Das, about 21 years old, a resident of Rupabad under Pathraul police station. Both are residents of Deoghar district.During the raid, police seized two mobile phones and three SIM cards from their possession. The seized devices are being examined for further evidence, and more cases of fraud may come to light during the investigation.
The raid was carried out by Inspector Nagendra Prasad Sinha and Sub-Inspector Virendra Oraon of Cyber Police Station, Deoghar, along with other armed personnel.
Police have appealed to the public not to trust unknown customer care numbers found online and to avoid sharing banking details with strangers. Citizens are advised to immediately report any suspected cyber fraud to the nearest police station or cyber helpline.
