Five Fisheries Projects Bring New Hope to Garhwa in Jharkhand

Ranchi- The announcement and launch of five fisheries projects in Garhwa district have generated widespread optimism among local residents, with many viewing the initiative as a turning point for livelihood enhancement and economic growth in the region.

The Department of Fisheries has approved seven projects across Jharkhand, allocating five of them to Garhwa, a move that has been warmly received by local fish farmers and traders. Fisheries is one of the most prominent economic activities in the district, and the new investments are expected to strengthen the sector considerably.

A major highlight is the approval of a Rs 4 crore project under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) for Nurul Hoda Ansari of Pipra village in Meral block. The project focuses on building modern fisheries infrastructure and improving production capacity.

The FIDF scheme is designed to support the creation of infrastructure in both inland and marine fisheries, while promoting higher fish production through modern technology. It supports the long-term vision of expanding the fisheries sector through sustainable and scientific practices.

The sanctioned projects will facilitate advanced fish farming systems, seed production units, and improved infrastructure. Additionally, four more projects are proposed, including cage-based fish farming in the Annaraj Dam.

Special emphasis is being placed on tribal welfare through these initiatives. The District Fisheries Department is connecting tribal families to fisheries-based livelihoods under the Riverine Fisheries for Flowing Waters (RRF) scheme, which promotes fish farming in naturally flowing rivers and streams.

Local villagers have welcomed the projects, saying they will help them achieve financial independence and ensure steady income. Sector experts also see significant potential, noting that Garhwa already has nearly 7,000 registered fishermen. Increased participation could further accelerate growth and employment in fisheries.
