Patratu plant starts 800 MW power generation, Jharkhand moves towards energy independence

Ranchi: Jharkhand has taken a major step toward energy self-reliance with the commencement of 800 MW power generation at the Patratu Super Thermal Power Plant. This is the first operational unit of the planned 4,000 MW project, developed by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL)—a joint venture of NTPC and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL).

Electricity from the unit is being supplied through the Katia grid to Hatia-2, Burmu, Lalpania, and PGCIL grids, further reaching areas like Govindpur and Santhal Pargana. The first phase of the project involves three units of 800 MW each. With one unit now functional, PVUNL is seeking commercial operation clearance (COD) from the Centre, after which JBVNL will begin billing at ?2.73 per unit.

The Patratu project is expected to significantly reduce Jharkhand’s power shortage, meet its peak demand of around 3,200 MW, and boost industrial as well as economic growth. Out of the 800 MW generated, 85% will be supplied to Jharkhand and 15% to the central pool. Ultimately, the state will secure between 3,200 and 3,500 MW from the project.

To support the supply, Jharkhand Urja Sancharan Nigam Limited completed a 6.6 km 400 kV double-circuit transmission line from Patratu to Katia at a cost of ?64.51 crore. Work was carried out on priority after forest clearance in January, and the line has now been successfully charged.

Fuel supply for the plant is secured through the Banhardih coal block, which holds an estimated 1,372 million tonnes of coal, of which 270.81 million tonnes are extractable.

The total project cost is ?26,000 crore, with NTPC holding a 74% stake and the Jharkhand government holding 26%. The MoU was signed in May 2015, followed by a JV agreement in July 2015 and final approval in September 2015.

With this launch, the Patratu plant is poised to transform Jharkhand’s power sector, reducing dependence on external sources while strengthening the foundation for industrial and economic progress.
