Jharkhand Assembly Adjourned Indefinitely to Mourn the Passing of Shibu Soren

Ranchi — The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly adjourned its monsoon session indefinitely on Monday to pay homage to Shibu Soren, fondly known as "Dishom Guru", a towering figure in tribal politics and the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Soren was also serving as a Rajya Sabha MP at the time of his death.

The session, which was scheduled to continue until August 7, was halted shortly after it commenced. Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato, with deep emotion, informed the House of the veteran leader's demise, describing it as a profound loss for the state and the nation.

“Today marks a tragic moment for Jharkhand’s political and social landscape. Dishom Guru gave his life to the cause of tribal empowerment and the state's identity. His loss is irreplaceable,” said Mahato.

Following a minute of silence, members across party lines stood in tribute, chanting slogans like "Veer Shibu Soren Amar Rahe" and "Dishom Guru Amar Rahe".

Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Opposition Leader Babulal Marandi, former Chief Ministers Raghubar Das and Arjun Munda, and several other political figures expressed grief and paid tribute to Soren’s legacy of statehood advocacy and tribal welfare.

Soren, 81, breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi after battling multiple health issues including kidney failure and complications from a recent stroke. He had also undergone open-heart surgery in the past.
