New Delhi – Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and founding leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Shibu Soren, passed away at the age of 81 following a prolonged illness, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders across the political spectrum.
His son and current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, confirmed the news of his passing. Fondly known as "Guruji" or "Dishom Guru," Shibu Soren was a key figure in the tribal rights movement and a driving force behind the creation of Jharkhand state.
He served three times as the state’s Chief Minister – in 2005, 2008–2009, and 2009–2010 – though each term was marred by political instability.
Political leaders from all major parties paid homage to Soren, recalling his lifelong commitment to the upliftment of tribal and marginalized communities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on X, wrote: “Deeply saddened by the news of Shibu Soren Ji’s demise. He fought tirelessly for the rights of Jharkhand’s tribal communities.”
Shah added that Soren’s simplicity and humility helped him connect with the masses, and prayed for strength for the grieving family.
Union Minister J.P. Nadda remembered Soren as a people's leader who was always accessible and voiced the concerns of tribal communities.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he had known Soren personally and described his demise as a great personal loss. He noted that Soren had spent his life fighting for the rights of the underprivileged, especially tribals.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge lauded Soren’s fight for statehood for Jharkhand and the rights of indigenous people over natural resources. Former Chief Minister Champai Soren called his passing “the end of an era.”
Other leaders, including Babulal Marandi, Yogi Adityanath, Mayawati, Supriya Sule, Naveen Patnaik, Rekha Gupta, and Arvind Kejriwal, also expressed deep sorrow and paid rich tributes.
Remembered for his grassroots activism and unwavering focus on tribal empowerment, Shibu Soren remains a towering figure in Indian politics whose legacy will endure.
