Hazaribagh: Three Bangladeshi nationals—two women and one man—escaped from the detention centre located inside the Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail premises in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, officials confirmed on Monday.
The escape reportedly occurred late Friday night or in the early hours of Saturday and has sparked alarm within the local administration.
The fugitives have been identified as Reena Khan alias Fina Devi, Nazmul, and Nipah Akhtar Khushi.
Following the incident, police launched search operations at multiple locations and alerted nearby districts. The photos and descriptions of the escapees have been circulated to police stations across the state to aid in their capture.
Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash visited the detention centre for an on-site inspection and ordered a detailed investigation. Senior officials also reviewed the security arrangements, and staff members have been questioned.
According to authorities, the three had entered India illegally without valid visas or passports and were arrested. After completing their respective prison terms, they were being held at the detention centre awaiting deportation to Bangladesh.
Reena Khan had been at the centre since February 4, 2022; Khushi since September 28, 2024; and Nazmul since March 1, 2025. Each had previously served time in different jails across Jharkhand.
Efforts were made to deport them, but officials stated that no response was received from Bangladeshi authorities.
This is not the first such incident at the Hazaribagh detention facility. On March 8, 2021, two Bangladeshi nationals—Mohammad Javed alias Noor and Mohammad Zahid Hussain—escaped by breaking the window bars. Similarly, on September 13, 2021, a Myanmar national, Mohammad Abdullah, also fled from the same centre.
The repeated escapes have raised serious questions about the security and management of the detention centre.
