Ranchi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued contempt notices to the Chief Secretaries of Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, and West Bengal for failing to implement its directives regarding medical and other benefits for retired High Court judges.
A bench comprising Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan noted that these states had not complied with the court’s orders issued on February 18. “Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, and Delhi have not implemented all the directions given by this court,” the bench stated.
The court has directed the issuance of contempt notices to the Chief Secretaries of the six states, requiring them to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for July 25.
The Supreme Court clarified that the personal appearance of the Chief Secretaries is not mandatory, provided a responsible IAS officer appears either in person or through virtual mode.
