Los Angeles: Renee Zellweger is set to star alongside Sissy Spacek and Mia Threapleton in the upcoming film A Woman in the Sun, marking the directorial debut of writer Julia Cox.
The film, described as a multi-generational family drama, centres around Claire Keating, a bartender living on Nantucket, whose life begins to unravel when her mother falls ill and her daughter returns home.
Julia Cox, known for writing Nyad, will direct the project for the first time. Zellweger is also producing the film along with Carmella Casinelli for Big Picture Co. and Kim Roth, while Greg Gertmenian serves as co-producer.
Speaking about the project, Zellweger said supporting emerging filmmakers has always been a key goal of Big Picture Co. She praised Cox’s script as a “storytelling treasure” and said the team was excited to help bring her vision to life.
The film is being co-financed by Black Bear and Artists Equity, the production company led by Ben Affleck.
Affleck described Cox as a talented writer and expressed confidence that her directorial debut would make a strong impression in the film industry. He called the movie a gripping and emotional exploration of family relationships with deeper tensions hidden beneath the surface.
He added that Artists Equity aims to support filmmakers at every stage of their careers and said projects like ‘A Woman in the Sun’ represent exactly the kind of meaningful storytelling the company wants to champion.
