India's passenger vehicle market achieved a historic milestone in October, with monthly wholesale dispatches crossing the five-lakh mark for the first time, as strong festive demand drove record sales for several leading automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Industry estimates put domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, which refer to factory dispatches to dealerships, at around 5.25-5.30 lakh units in October, compared with approximately 4.6 lakh units in the corresponding month last year. This represents year-on-year growth of around 13-15 per cent, despite a relatively high base in October 2025.

The country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, led the market with domestic dispatches of 2.12 lakh vehicles, registering a 20 per cent increase over the same month last year. Tata Motors recorded 21 per cent growth, with sales reaching 73,894 units, while Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 2 per cent rise to 73,338 units. Hyundai Motor India also posted strong growth, with domestic wholesales increasing 16.7 per cent to 62,799 units.

The record dispatches came ahead of the peak festive buying period, with Dhanteras and Diwali falling in the first half of November. Automakers and dealerships increased inventory in October to prepare for the anticipated surge in customer deliveries during the festive season.

Gaurav Vangaal, Associate Director for Light Vehicle Production Forecasting at Mobility Global, noted that October's wholesale figures largely reflected dealership stocking ahead of the festive rush. He added that retail registrations for the month were expected to decline compared with last year's high festive-season base, as a substantial number of deliveries shifted to November.

The latest growth also reflects a recovery in consumer demand following the reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates last year. During 2025, vehicle purchases had slowed between mid-August and mid-September as many prospective buyers postponed decisions in anticipation of lower tax rates. Once the revised rates came into effect in the last week of September, demand rebounded sharply and remained strong through the festive period and October.

Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg attributed the company's record performance to robust festive demand and healthy momentum in both domestic and export markets.

Mahindra & Mahindra Automotive Business President Velusamy R also described October as a landmark month for the company, crediting festive-season demand and its refreshed vehicle portfolio for sustaining sales momentum.

The broader passenger vehicle industry has benefited from several favourable factors, including lower GST rates, reduced borrowing costs and income tax reforms that have improved household purchasing power. These developments have supported vehicle affordability and encouraged consumers to make new purchases.

The industry's growth momentum is also reflected in the first-half performance of the current financial year. Domestic passenger vehicle sales increased 28.3 per cent to 20.55 lakh units during the April-September period, underlining the strength of demand in one of the world's largest automobile markets.

The record October wholesales signal continued confidence in India's passenger vehicle market, although the actual retail sales picture will become clearer after the festive-season registrations are accounted for in November.
