MSC Group to Acquire 49% Stake in Adani's Vizhinjam Port in $1.4 Billion Deal

Ahmedabad- Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) on Tuesday announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with MSC Group, under which the group's container terminal investment arm, Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), will acquire a 49 per cent stake in Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited (AVPPL), the concessionaire operating the Vizhinjam International Seaport.

Under the agreement, TiL will invest approximately $1.397 billion for its 49 per cent stake, valuing the port at around $2.85 billion. The deal is being described as the largest foreign private investment in India's port infrastructure and is expected to strengthen Vizhinjam's position as a key transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean.

Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and CEO of APSEZ, said the port has witnessed exceptional growth since commencing operations and has become the first Indian port to handle more than two million TEUs within just 18 months.

He added that expanding APSEZ's long-standing partnership with MSC to Vizhinjam would help improve global supply chain efficiency and enhance India's connectivity with major international markets.

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory and other approvals.

According to the company, the partnership is expected to boost cargo volumes, accelerate the port's growth, increase cargo traffic from Bangladesh that currently relies on Southeast Asian transshipment hubs, strengthen connectivity with East African trade routes, and raise relay cargo volumes.

TiL, a part of MSC Group, is among the world's largest container terminal operators, managing a network of more than 100 container terminals across five continents with an annual throughput exceeding 70 million TEUs.

Commissioned in December 2024, Vizhinjam International Seaport is India's first deep-draft mega transshipment port with an initial handling capacity of 1.6 million TEUs. Ongoing expansion is expected to increase its capacity by 3.5 times to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028.

Located just 10 nautical miles from the busy East-West international shipping route linking Europe, the Persian Gulf and the Far East, the port has quickly emerged as a strategic maritime hub.

During FY26, the port handled 1.3 million TEUs and serviced 615 vessels, becoming the fastest Indian port to cross the one-million TEU milestone.
