Indian Navy Unit Collides with Pakistani Naval Ship; India Lodges Strong Protest

India on Wednesday summoned the Charge d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission and lodged a strong protest following a collision between a Pakistani naval unit and an Indian Navy ship in international waters.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the conduct of the Pakistani naval unit as “unacceptable” and “unprofessional”, saying the incident appeared to have resulted from an inappropriate manoeuvre by the Pakistani side.

The collision did not cause any major damage, according to the MEA. However, the incident prompted concern within India’s security establishment given that it involved naval units of the two neighbouring countries.

In a statement, the MEA said the Charge d’Affaires of the High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi was summoned and formally conveyed India’s strong protest over the incident.

According to the ministry, the Pakistani naval unit’s conduct was in contravention of Article 10 of the April 1991 Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troop Movements.

The Pakistani diplomat was asked to convey to the concerned authorities in Pakistan that military units should exercise due care and comply with relevant bilateral agreements to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The Charge d'Affaires of Pakistan was advised to convey to the concerned Pakistani authorities the need for all military units to observe due care and respect the provisions of the relevant agreements between the two sides in order to prevent any repeat of such incidents,” the MEA said.
