Iran conflict highlights limits of China’s geopolitical reach in Middle East: Report

Brussels — The ongoing conflict involving Iran has exposed the limitations of China’s strategy in the Middle East, showing that economic engagement alone may not translate into geopolitical influence, according to a report.

The analysis, published by Brussels-based EU Reporter, noted that Beijing has focused on trade, investment, and energy partnerships in the region while avoiding military commitments typically associated with maintaining regional security.

Unlike the United States, which has historically relied on military alliances and deployments, China has pursued a model centred on economic cooperation and selective diplomatic mediation. The report said this approach resembles ideas associated with Sun Tzu, emphasising influence without direct confrontation.

However, the military campaign launched by the United States and Israel against Iran risks upsetting this balance. The report argued that the conflict brings renewed attention to the decisive role of military power in shaping regional dynamics.

Over the past decade, China has expanded its economic and diplomatic footprint in the Middle East, turning the region into a key component of its global strategy. Energy security remains central to Beijing’s involvement, as it is the world’s largest crude oil importer and relies heavily on supplies from Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq.

The Middle East also plays a crucial role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to connect Asia with Europe and Africa through infrastructure and trade networks. Through investments in ports, energy facilities, and logistics corridors, Beijing has sought to integrate the region into a wider Eurasian economic framework.

The report concluded that while China has strengthened its economic presence and diplomatic engagement, its reluctance to take on direct military responsibilities may limit its ability to shape geopolitical outcomes in times of conflict.
