Washington- India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, met with US Congressman Rudy Yakym to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, trade cooperation, and the expanding energy partnership between the two nations.
Following the meeting, Kwatra posted on X: “Had a productive conversation with Representative Rudy Yakym on India-US bilateral ties. Exchanged notes on trade cooperation and the growing energy partnership with the US, which is integral for India’s energy security. Appreciated his support for the relationship.”
This engagement is part of a series of meetings between Kwatra and US lawmakers from both parties. On Thursday, he met Congressman Blake Moore, Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference, to discuss trade and energy issues. He also held talks with Representative Mike Kelly, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Taxation, focusing on economic ties and India’s hydrocarbon purchases from the US.
In another meeting, Kwatra briefed Representative Carol Miller, Chair of the Congressional Energy Export Caucus, on India’s energy security priorities and trade. He reiterated India’s support for global diplomatic efforts, including dialogue to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
Earlier, Kwatra met Representative Gregory Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Meeks reaffirmed Congress’ support for the US-India partnership, while voicing concerns over tariffs imposed by former President Trump on Indian imports.
On August 27, Trump announced 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s continued imports of discounted Russian oil. India rejected the move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” stressing its energy security and strategic autonomy.
