Male – Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at Velana International Airport in Male on Friday to a grand ceremonial welcome, marking the start of a high-profile state visit to the Maldives. He was warmly received by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as traditional songs and chants of “Vande Mataram” echoed through the air, showcasing the close cultural ties between the two nations.
PM Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of President Muizzu, as he attends Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour — a symbolic diplomatic gesture reflecting the strengthening of India-Maldives relations.
This is Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to the Maldives, and the first by any foreign head of government during President Muizzu’s tenure.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders will review the progress of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, which was adopted during President Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024.
The visit underlines India’s ongoing commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the broader strategic vision of MAHASAGAR, which aims to enhance regional cooperation and maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.
Key areas expected to be discussed during the visit include infrastructure development, defence collaboration, and economic connectivity, further strengthening the multi-dimensional partnership between the two countries.
India and the Maldives share deep-rooted ties based on ethnicity, language, culture, religion, and trade. India was among the first nations to recognize Maldivian independence in 1965 and to establish diplomatic relations.
India’s swift military intervention during the 1988 coup attempt in the Maldives laid the foundation for enduring trust between the two countries. The prompt withdrawal of Indian troops following the intervention reinforced India’s respect for Maldivian sovereignty.
This visit is especially meaningful as it marks both the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and the 60th year of India-Maldives diplomatic relations, as noted in the official statement.
