Islamabad: At least 15 more lives were lost on Monday as fresh spells of torrential monsoon rains battered Pakistan, bringing the total death toll since late June to 111, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to The Express Tribune, the relentless rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, flash floods, and high-speed winds caused widespread destruction across the country. In Punjab alone, at least nine people were killed and over 60 injured as the severe weather swept from Rawalpindi to Rajanpur and beyond.
Farooq Ahmad, spokesperson for emergency service Rescue 1122, confirmed that Punjab had reported nine fatalities and 62 injuries due to the powerful downpours and strong winds since Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported six more deaths, including a man, a woman, and four children, in the districts of Khyber, Malakand, Kohat, and Bajaur.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a total of 111 people—including 53 children—have died since the start of the monsoon season in late June. The causes include electrocution, flash floods, lightning strikes, and building collapses.
In Lahore, a 20-year-old man named Faisal died when the roof of his house collapsed, injuring four others. A similar roof collapse in Manga Mandi’s Jagiyan area left two children injured. In a nearby village, another roof gave way, trapping residents underneath the debris. Two children were rescued alive and taken to hospital.
In Rawalpindi, tragedy struck on the M2 Motorway near the Chakri Interchange when a passenger bus skidded on the rain-soaked road and overturned, killing four people on the spot and injuring 22 others.
In Okara’s Naeemabad area, lightning killed two teenagers and left another critically injured. In Bahawalnagar, the roof of a madrassa collapsed, claiming the lives of two children and injuring 14 others. Twelve of the injured were rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.
