PM Modi Awarded Cyprus’ Highest Civilian Honour, Dedicates It to India-Cyprus Friendship

Nicosia — Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian honour of Cyprus, by President Nikos Christodoulides during their bilateral meeting at the Presidential Palace on Monday.

Graciously accepting the award, PM Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “This honour is not just mine—it belongs to the 1.4 billion citizens of India. It is a recognition of their strength, aspirations, and spirit.”

Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote:

“Humbled to receive the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’ of Cyprus. I dedicate it to the friendship between our nations.”

Highlighting the deeper meaning behind the honour, PM Modi said it symbolizes India’s values of cultural harmony and the ancient Indian ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—"the world is one family."
“This award stands as a testament to the enduring bond between India and Cyprus, our shared democratic values, and mutual respect,” he added.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the recognition also reflects both nations' commitment to peace, sovereignty, and regional integrity.
He reaffirmed India’s partnership with Cyprus, saying, “In the days ahead, I am confident that our partnership will continue to grow stronger, benefiting not only our countries but also contributing to global peace and stability.”

This is the 23rd international honour conferred on PM Modi by a foreign government, underlining his stature as a global leader and advocate of regional cooperation, inclusive development, and cultural diplomacy.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and President Christodoulides held comprehensive talks at the Presidential Palace, making history with Modi’s first-ever visit to Cyprus—a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations.

Their discussions focused on enhancing trade, investment, security, and technological cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to elevating bilateral relations to new heights.

PM Modi was also given a ceremonial welcome and laid a floral wreath at the memorial of Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus and a revered religious figure.

India and Cyprus have maintained strong diplomatic relations since 1962. Cyprus has been a consistent supporter of India on key global issues, including Kashmir, at international forums like the United Nations.

During his visit, PM Modi was warmly received by members of the Indian diaspora in Cyprus. While relatively small in number, the Indian community plays a prominent role in education, healthcare, and business, contributing actively to Cypriot society.
