UK: 50 Injured as Car Rams into Crowd Celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League Victory

Liverpool: At least 50 people, including four children, were injured after a car ploughed into a large crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating the club’s Premier League title win in the city centre on Monday evening.

Of those injured, 27 have been hospitalised, with one child and one adult reported to be in serious condition.

The shocking incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Water Street, as celebrations were winding down. Videos circulating on social media show the car speeding through the crowd, narrowly missing several people and swerving slightly to avoid denser sections of the gathering.

Eyewitnesses said the car initially stopped after hitting some individuals but then accelerated again, striking more people.

"People rushed toward the car and started smashing its windows, but the driver kept going," said an eyewitness, Rashid.

The vehicle eventually came to a halt, where it was surrounded by angry fans. Police intervened to control the situation and protect the driver from the agitated crowd.

The driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, was arrested at the scene. Authorities confirmed he acted alone and that no other suspects are being sought. They have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated, “Just after 6 o’clock this evening, as the parade was coming to an end, we received reports of a car colliding with multiple pedestrians on Water Street. A number of people were injured and taken to hospital. Several others, including children, were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalisation.”

She urged the public not to speculate or spread misinformation, adding, “Extensive enquiries are underway to determine the exact circumstances. We believe this was an isolated incident, and we are not currently seeking anyone else in connection.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the act, calling the scenes “appalling,” and expressed his concern for the victims.

“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling—my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” Starmer posted on X. “I thank the police and emergency services for their swift response and urge the public to allow the authorities the space they need to investigate.”
