Caracas- Venezuela has declared a nationwide State of Emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck the country in quick succession, leaving at least 32 people dead and more than 700 injured, according to Acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
Providing an official update on Thursday, Rodriguez said the death and injury figures are preliminary and do not include the northern coastal state of La Guaira, where communication has been severely disrupted. She described the region as a "disaster zone" after dozens of buildings were reduced to rubble.
"La Guaira state is a true tragedy," Rodriguez said during an address on Venezuelan state television.

The twin earthquakes struck on Wednesday evening, with the US Geological Survey (USGS) recording a magnitude 7.1 quake at 2204 GMT, followed just a minute later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. Both earthquakes were centred near the coastal town of Moron, around 160 km west of the capital, Caracas.
The quakes occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 km, increasing their destructive potential and triggering widespread damage across several parts of the country.
Soon after the disaster, Rodriguez announced a State of Emergency across Venezuela and urged citizens to remain calm while staying alert to possible aftershocks.
"Following the strong earthquakes recorded this afternoon in the country, we have declared a State of Emergency throughout the national territory. We call on all citizens to remain alert, safe, and as calm as possible," she said in a post on X.
She also confirmed that Maiquetia International Airport has been closed after sustaining damage. Security personnel, medical teams and civil protection agencies have been deployed nationwide to carry out rescue, relief and emergency response operations.

Interior, Justice and Peace Minister Diosdado Cabello said the earthquakes caused damage in several cities, with multiple buildings collapsing in the eastern part of the Caracas metropolitan area. He advised residents to stay away from damaged structures as strong aftershocks could trigger further collapses.
Cabello appealed to the public to remain calm and united as rescue efforts continue.
The tremors were also felt strongly in several neighbouring Colombian cities, according to local media reports.
The USGS has warned that the twin earthquakes are likely to result in extensive damage and a significant rise in casualties as search and rescue operations continue.
