Jerusalem: Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz have instructed the Israeli military to cease fire in Lebanon, according to local media reports.
Despite the order, Israeli forces will continue to maintain their positions in parts of southern Lebanon and have not withdrawn from the territory under their control.
The development comes amid escalating regional tensions after Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States and Israel of violating the terms of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Iranian officials claimed the decision was prompted by continued Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire arrangement.

According to Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency, the country's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the closure was a response to what it described as a breach of the MoU's first clause, which calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations involving Iran, the United States and their respective allies across all fronts, including Lebanon.
The MoU was signed on June 18 through a simultaneous digital process by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement commits both sides to end military operations and refrain from future use or threat of force.

On Friday, Iran had introduced new rules for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, requiring ships to register in advance and obtain permits and insurance before entering one of the world's busiest energy shipping lanes. However, despite Tehran's declaration of a renewed closure, U.S. officials have said there is currently no evidence that commercial maritime traffic through the strait has been physically halted.
