Trump Hails PM Modi as ‘One of the World’s Toughest Negotiators’, Says India’s Global Role Will Keep Growing

Evian (France): US President Donald Trump showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, describing him as one of the world's toughest negotiators and expressing confidence that India would continue to strengthen its global influence under his leadership.

Speaking alongside PM Modi after their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Trump highlighted the close personal bond they share and the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States.

"We had some very good conversations with Prime Minister Modi of India. A lot of things are happening between the United States and India," Trump said.

Asked about the progress of bilateral trade negotiations, the US President indicated that an agreement was close and commended Modi's negotiating abilities.

"We're very close. He's a very tough negotiator—one of the toughest, actually," Trump remarked.

In his characteristic style, Trump went on to describe the Indian Prime Minister as someone whose calm demeanour masks his negotiating strength.

"You look at this man. He looks so nice. He's like an angel. But actually, he's a killer. He's as tough as they come," Trump said, adding that Modi often surprises those who underestimate him.

"He gets you by surprise. People say he's such a nice man. I say he's very tough—a tough negotiator," he added.

Trump also praised Modi's commitment to both India and India-US relations.

"He loves the Indian people, but he also loves the US," the President said.

Recalling their previous public engagements, Trump referred to the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston and his visit to India during his first presidential term.

"We had a great time in India," he said, remembering the massive crowds that attended their joint public appearances.

Responding to a question about India's growing influence in West Asia, Trump said New Delhi's role on the global stage would continue to expand.

"I think India plays a big role in everything. As long as he's the leader, India is going to play a big role," he said.

Addressing concerns in India over recent US policy decisions, Trump sought to reassure Indians about the future of bilateral ties.

"As long as I'm President, they have a great friend in the White House. They love India. They have tremendous respect for this man," he said.

Trump also underlined the strength of the relationship between the two countries.

"India can do anything they want with us. We have the best relationship. We cannot be closer than we are—both him and I, and our nations," he said.

Prime Minister Modi, in his remarks, said the two countries had significantly strengthened their partnership since their previous meeting in Washington.

"We had an extremely productive meeting in Washington last year, and since then we have given new speed and new energy to our relations," he said.

India and the United States have expanded cooperation across defence, trade, technology, energy and strategic affairs in recent years. The two countries also work closely through the Quad grouping with Australia and Japan, while the rapport between Trump and Modi has remained one of the defining features of the bilateral relationship.
