Centre Dismisses Reports of Proposed Deep-Sea Energy Pipeline Linking India and Gulf Nations

New Delhi- The Centre on Tuesday categorically denied media reports claiming that it is pursuing a deep-sea energy pipeline project connecting Gujarat with Oman and other Gulf countries.

In an official clarification, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said it had taken note of several media reports suggesting that the government was actively working on a proposed deep-water energy corridor, sometimes referred to as the Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline (MEIDP).

“The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas wishes to categorically clarify that no such proposal is currently under consideration by this Ministry. There are no active discussions or negotiations with Oman or any other Gulf countries on this project at any level in this Ministry,” the statement said.

The ministry added that the clarification was being issued to put an end to all speculation surrounding the reported project.

Meanwhile, the government said that the Malta-flagged LNG carrier DISHA, managed by a consortium led by the Shipping Corporation of India, safely transited through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday carrying 62,370 metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) destined for Dahej in Gujarat. The vessel is expected to reach India on June 18.

The government also said it remains in constant coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, shipping companies and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers. Port operations across the country continue to function normally, with no congestion reported.

In a related development, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has advised shipping companies and maritime recruitment agencies to avoid deploying Indian seafarers in conflict-affected areas of the Middle East until further orders. The advisory comes days after three Indian seafarers aboard the vessel MT Settebello were killed following a US military strike off the Oman coast.

The DGS has also instructed masters of vessels operating in or transiting through the Gulf region, including the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters, to maintain heightened security vigilance, closely monitor navigational warnings and implement all applicable ship and company security measures.

The government has reiterated that India's energy supplies and maritime operations remain secure despite heightened tensions in West Asia.
