Asiad 2018: Dipa disappoints in women's balance beam final

India's star gymnast Dipa Karmakar finished fifth in the women's balance beam final at the 18th Asian Games on Friday, missing out on a podium finish.

The 25-year-old gymnast scored 12.500 points in the final, leaving her outside the medal positions despite her reputation as one of India's leading gymnasts.

Dipa's campaign had already been affected by a right knee injury sustained during training for the qualification round. The injury forced her to sit out India's women's artistic gymnastics team final on Wednesday.

China's Yile Chen produced the strongest performance in the balance beam final to win the gold medal with a score of 14.600. North Korea's Su Jong Kim claimed silver, while China's Jin Zhang took the bronze.

The fifth-place finish was a disappointing outcome for Dipa, who had been one of India's major medal hopes in gymnastics. Her participation itself came despite the setback caused by the knee injury, making the event a challenging one for the Indian gymnast.
