Mbappe Reaches Historic World Cup Milestones as France Storm into Semifinals

Foxborough: Kylian Mbappe continues to rewrite FIFA World Cup history, becoming the youngest player to make 20 World Cup appearances and the fastest footballer to score 20 goals in the tournament. The French superstar achieved the remarkable feat while leading France to a 2-0 win over Morocco in the quarterfinals, securing a place in the team's third World Cup semifinal.

The 27-year-old overcame a first-half penalty miss before opening the scoring in the 60th minute at Boston Stadium. He later provided the assist for Ousmane Dembele's goal, sealing France's comfortable victory.

Although Lionel Messi remains the all-time leader with 30 FIFA World Cup appearances, Mbappe has now become France's most-capped player in the competition with 20 matches. He has moved ahead of French greats Hugo Lloris, Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Raphael Varane.

Mbappe's strike against Morocco was his eighth goal of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking his overall World Cup tally to 20 goals from just 20 matches across the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions. He now stands only one goal behind Messi's all-time record of 21 World Cup goals.

Already France's highest-ever goalscorer, Mbappe has strengthened his reputation as one of the greatest players in World Cup history, adding another landmark to an already glittering international career.

Earlier in the tournament, France's 3-0 victory over Sweden saw Mbappe become the French player with the most World Cup wins, recording his 15th victory. His win over Paraguay took that tally to 16, drawing him level with Brazilian legend Cafu. The quarterfinal triumph over Morocco marked his 17th World Cup victory, equalling Germany's Miroslav Klose. Only Messi, with 20 World Cup wins, remains ahead of him.

Mbappe has also established himself as the most prolific player in World Cup knockout matches. Having entered the 2026 tournament tied with Brazilian icons Leonidas and Ronaldo on eight knockout-stage goals, he surpassed both with a brace against Sweden, added another against Paraguay, and extended his record to 12 knockout goals with his strike against Morocco.
