FIFA World Cup: Cape Verde’s dream debut ends in heartbreak, but Blue Sharks leave a lasting legacy

Miami- Tiny island nation Cape Verde may have bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but their remarkable debut campaign has earned admiration across the football world.

With a population of just over half a million spread across an archipelago covering around 4,000 square kilometres, Cape Verde had already made history by qualifying for the tournament. The nation, which gained independence in 1975, saw its football team begin its international journey only a few years later, in 1978.

The Blue Sharks became the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup Round of 32 after an impressive group-stage campaign. Three consecutive draws secured second place with three points, finishing ahead of two-time champions Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Their reward was a daunting knockout clash against defending champions Argentina in Miami. What followed was one of the tournament's most memorable encounters, with the debutants twice fighting back before eventually suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat after an own goal in the 111th minute.

Argentina took the lead midway through the first half through Lionel Messi, who controlled Lisandro Martínez's lofted pass brilliantly before finishing past goalkeeper Vozinha.

Cape Verde, however, refused to be overawed. Deroy Duarte levelled the score by converting Ryan Mendes' cross, firing through Martínez's legs and beyond goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Inspired goalkeeping from Vozinha and a crucial goal-line clearance by Pico Lopes kept the scores level and forced extra time.

Argentina regained the lead in the 92nd minute when Lisandro Martínez finished from close range after Messi's corner was flicked on by Alexis Mac Allister. Yet Cape Verde produced another stunning response as Sidny Lopes Cabral dribbled past Mac Allister before curling a superb strike into the far corner to make it 2-2.

The fairytale, however, ended in cruel fashion when an unfortunate own goal by Diney Borges in the 111th minute handed Argentina victory and ended the tournament debutants' historic run.

Despite the defeat, Cape Verde head coach Bubista praised his players for their courage and determination after taking the world champions to extra time.

"We drew twice against the world champions, we took it to extra time. More than anything, I'm proud of our players, who represented our country with dignity. We showed our identity, and I feel enormous pride in what they achieved," Bubista told reporters, while also congratulating Argentina on their victory.

He added that his team had stayed true to its style despite facing one of the world's strongest sides.

"We knew how difficult this match would be because of Argentina's quality, but we played with bravery and never abandoned our identity. I don't think many teams can score twice against Argentina and force them into extra time. Coming back to equalise twice showed our character and spirit."

The coach admitted there was heartbreak in the dressing room after the final whistle.

"There is sadness because we're leaving the tournament and because we came so close. But the players should also be proud of what they achieved for our country. They were hugging each other and crying. That shows this team has a soul, and we are very proud of them," he said.
