New Delhi- Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has made it clear that India will send only athletes capable of delivering strong performances at the 2026 Asian Games, stressing that events such as the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games are not meant to serve as "exposure tours."
His remarks came amid discussions over the possible inclusion of the Indian men's football team in the country's contingent for the Asian Games, which begin on September 19.
Speaking at an interaction in New Delhi on Thursday, Dr. Mandaviya said the selection process would remain fully transparent, but athletes and teams would be chosen strictly on merit rather than to fill available slots.
"The Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are platforms where athletes compete to bring glory to the nation. They are not meant for exposure. As per our selection policy, only those ranked among the top six in Asia will be considered. There are plenty of other international competitions where athletes can gain valuable exposure," he said.

The Minister assured that the government would fully support athletes and sports federations seeking international training opportunities ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics. He said federations could submit long-term training and exposure plans, while individual athletes wishing to train abroad would also receive assistance.
"However, participation alone cannot be the reason for inclusion in the Asian Games contingent. Entries that do not meet the performance criteria will not be approved," he added.
Dr. Mandaviya also revealed that India's contingent for the 2026 Asian Games is expected to be limited to around 560 athletes. While national sports federations will recommend athletes in accordance with the ministry's guidelines, the final approval will rest with the Sports Ministry.
He further explained that the selection process would include mandatory videography in the presence of a government observer. The shortlisted names would first be forwarded to the Indian Olympic Association, then vetted by the Sports Authority of India before being sent to the ministry for final clearance. Only athletes receiving the ministry's approval will be part of the official Indian contingent.
