IPL 2026: ‘Tilak’s knock was long overdue,’ says Hardik Pandya after MI crush GT

Ahmedabad — Hardik Pandya lauded Tilak Varma for stepping up with a match-winning century as the Mumbai Indians registered a commanding 99-run victory over the Gujarat Titans in Match 30 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium.

Pandya said Tilak’s innings came at just the right time for both the player and the team, adding that such performances were expected from someone of his calibre.

“The kind of talent Tilak has, he doesn’t need much guidance. It was only a matter of time before he delivered. This knock was crucial for him and for the team,” Pandya said after the match.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted an imposing 199/5, powered by Tilak’s explosive unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls. His innings also matched the franchise record for the fastest century. Naman Dhir chipped in with a valuable 45, helping stabilize the innings after an early wobble.

The victory was particularly significant for MI as it ended their four-match losing streak. Pandya admitted that winning in Ahmedabad made it even more satisfying, given the team’s struggles at the venue in the past.

“It’s always tough to win away from home, and Ahmedabad hasn’t been a lucky ground for us. So this win feels very satisfying,” he noted.

With the ball, MI dominated from the outset. Jasprit Bumrah struck off the very first delivery, while Pandya dismissed Jos Buttler early, putting GT on the back foot.

Addressing questions about Bumrah’s role with the new ball, Pandya clarified that it was a tactical decision rather than a concern. “People often ask why Jassi doesn’t bowl with the new ball, but he has done that several times before. It’s not an issue—it’s just about using his strengths effectively,” he explained.

Mumbai’s bowlers delivered as a unit, with Ashwani Kumar leading the charge with figures of 4/24. Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar chipped in with two wickets each, ensuring GT never found momentum in the chase.

Pandya credited the team’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding for the comprehensive win. “It was about hitting the right areas with intent. The youngsters were outstanding, and the fielding backed it up well,” he said.

Following the emphatic victory, Mumbai Indians climbed to seventh place on the points table with four points from six matches. They will next take on arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings on April 23.
