Hockey India League Governing Council Assumes Control of UP Rudras Ahead of 2026 Season

New Delhi – The Governing Council of the Hockey India League (Hero HIL) has officially taken over operations of the UP Rudras franchise for the upcoming 2026 season, ensuring that its players continue to participate and that the league retains its competitive balance.

In a statement, the Council said it will oversee the team’s affairs until a new franchise owner is secured. “We remain open to discussions with interested parties who may wish to acquire the new franchise,” it added.

The development follows Rudras’ decision to withdraw from the league, citing concerns over financial sustainability. The franchise, however, stressed that it would now focus on strengthening the grassroots of Indian hockey through school and community programs, early talent scouting, and structured training initiatives designed to bridge the gap between local players and national-level recognition.

The announcement coincided with the HIL 2026 Mini Auctions, where more than 100 male and female players went under the hammer. With salary caps of ?4 crore for men’s teams and ?2 crore for women’s teams, franchises were expected to make careful decisions to shape their squads of 20 players each—comprising two goalkeepers and 18 outfield players. Rules allow a maximum of seven overseas players and mandate at least three Indian juniors per team, ensuring a clear pathway for emerging talent.

Players were categorized into three base price brackets—?2 lakh, ?5 lakh, and ?10 lakh—with ?2 lakh being the minimum entry point for both Indian and overseas participants. Teams were required to balance their remaining purse with available slots while making their bids.
