New Delhi- Lhakpa Tsering, one of India’s most experienced cross-country rally drivers, is set to compete in the prestigious Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2025.
Scheduled from August 8 to 16 in Thailand, the rally will span over 3,400 kilometers across some of the region’s most challenging terrains — from dense forests and steep mountain trails to rugged riverbeds and demanding off-road tracks. Known as the “Dakar of the East,” the AXCR is regarded as the ultimate test of endurance, navigation, and resilience, attracting elite teams from across Asia.
This year’s competition will see participants from Thailand’s Toyota Gazoo Racing, as well as Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and India. The route begins and ends in Pattaya, pushing competitors through nine grueling days that require exceptional mental focus, physical stamina, and flawless teamwork. Tsering will take the wheel of the latest Toyota Hilux, renowned for its strength and reliability in extreme conditions.
“It’s an honour to represent India at the Asia Cross Country Rally, and even more special to carry the hopes of the Northeast with me,” Tsering said. “This opportunity is a big step forward not only for my career but also for aspiring motorsport talent from the region. I’m grateful to JK Tyre, the Department of Youth Affairs of Arunachal Pradesh, and Tanor Engineering for their belief in me and support for this dream.”
Abu Tayeng, Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs, Arunachal Pradesh, noted that the government aims to use the state’s natural beauty and terrain similarities with Southeast Asia to develop a motorsport ecosystem, promote eco-tourism, and boost regional pride.
Sanjay Sharma, Head of Corporate Communication & Motorsport at JK Tyre, added, “Lhakpa’s participation is a proud moment for the Northeast, which is steadily emerging as a hub for adventure and endurance sports. We’ve been committed to promoting motorsport in the region for years, and supporting Lhakpa at this international event is a natural extension of that effort.”
With support from JK Tyre, the Department of Youth Affairs of Arunachal Pradesh, Tanor Engineering founder Dilling Tatak, and Doc Rider, Tsering is ready to take on the challenge of Asia’s most demanding rally.
