New Delhi – Veteran fast bowler Ishant Sharma has congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on their historic 3-2 T20I series win against England — their first-ever T20I series victory over England on English soil.
Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian team clinched the series with a six-wicket win in the fourth T20I at Old Trafford. Although they lost the final match by five wickets on the last ball at Edgbaston, the series win remained a landmark achievement. Earlier, India also narrowly lost the third match at The Oval, which again went down to the final delivery.
“Congratulations to women’s #TeamIndia on winning the T20I series against England. Brilliant fight, incredible spirit, and a well-deserved victory. #IndVsEng,” Ishant posted on X.
Former India pacer RP Singh also praised the team, calling it a proud moment for Indian cricket:
“Heartiest congratulations to Team India on winning the T20I series against England! A proud moment for Indian cricket. Well played, Women in Blue! #IndVsEng,” he wrote on X.
In the final match, England chased down 168 in a tense finish. Arundhati Reddy sparked hopes of a turnaround by dismissing Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones in the first three balls of the final over. However, Sophie Ecclestone and Paige Scholfield kept their cool to seal the win off the last ball. England’s chase was anchored by a 101-run opening partnership between Danni Wyatt-Hodge (56 off 37) and Sophia Dunkley (46 off 30).
Earlier, India had put up 167/7, thanks to a blistering 75 off 41 balls from Shafali Verma. England’s Charlie Dean impressed with the ball, taking 3 for 23, including the wickets of Shafali and skipper Harmanpreet. Sophie Ecclestone chipped in with two wickets, removing the dangerous Richa Ghosh.
Despite England’s win in the final game, the Indian team’s gritty performance throughout the series sealed their historic triumph.
The two teams will now face off in a three-match ODI series, beginning July 16 in Southampton.
