Miami — Harry Kane struck twice as Bayern Munich defeated Flamengo 4-2 in a thrilling encounter at Hard Rock Stadium, securing their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals. Vincent Kompany’s side will now face Paris Saint-Germain for a spot in the semifinals at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.
Bayern took early control of the game, with Erick Pulgar heading into his own net, followed by Kane’s deflected shot that found the bottom corner off the post. Flamengo responded with a powerful strike from Gerson to reduce the deficit, but Leon Goretzka restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion before halftime, making it 3-1.
In the second half, Flamengo were handed a lifeline when Jorginho converted a penalty after Michel Olise was penalised for handball. But as the Brazilian side pushed for an equaliser, Kane sealed the win with a superb touch and clinical finish, ending Flamengo’s hopes.
“In the first 20 minutes, we played well, but the game’s intensity was ferocious,” said Bayern manager Vincent Kompany. “I was wondering, ‘Can we sustain this level in these conditions, against this opposition?’ To be fair, we grew into the game, and I think the fans witnessed a fantastic contest. We’re delighted to advance.”
Kompany emphasized that recovery would be the team's priority before the showdown with PSG.
“The key now is rest — we need to recover, rebuild our energy, and prepare for Saturday,” said the former Manchester City defender. “What more could you want? The best teams facing off on the biggest stage. We’ll be ready.”
Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis acknowledged Bayern’s superiority.
“We have to admit the better team won,” Luis said. “We knew Bayern were strong, and at this level, any mistake can be decisive. The team that deserved to progress, did so.”
