Birendra Lakra Joins Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team as Assistant Coach

New Delhi – Hockey India on Saturday announced that former Indian men’s hockey stalwart Birendra Lakra has joined the Indian junior men’s team as an assistant coach. The 35-year-old veteran defender will work alongside legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who is currently the head coach of the junior team.

Lakra's transition from player to mentor is expected to significantly bolster the team’s defensive structure and overall temperament—key elements as they prepare for the highly anticipated FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025, set to be held in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10.

A seasoned international, Lakra debuted for India in 2010 and went on to become one of the nation's most dependable defenders. He represented India at two Olympic Games—London 2012 and Tokyo 2020—helping the team secure a historic bronze medal in the latter. Over the course of a distinguished career spanning more than a decade, Lakra played a pivotal role in India's campaigns across the World Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and several other major international tournaments.

His impressive list of achievements includes a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, bronze in 2018, silver at the 2013 Asia Cup, silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and silver at the 2018 Champions Trophy. He was also a key member of the Indian squad that clinched bronze at the FIH Hockey World League Finals in 2015 (Raipur and Bhubaneswar) and earned podium finishes at the Asian Champions Trophy (gold in 2016, silver in 2012).

Most recently, the Odisha-born defender demonstrated his continued passion and fitness by playing for Team Gonasika in the Hockey India League 2024–25.

Reflecting on his new role, Lakra said,
“It is a great honour to be part of the Indian Junior Men’s setup at such a crucial time. I know what it means to wear the India jersey, and now I’m excited to guide the next generation as they prepare for the big stage. Working with Sreejesh—who has been both a teammate and an inspiration—is an exciting challenge. We’re focused on building a fearless and well-prepared squad, especially with the Junior World Cup approaching later this year.”

PR Sreejesh welcomed Lakra’s appointment, saying,
“Having Birendra on board is a huge boost. He brings a wealth of experience, tactical acumen, and calm leadership that will be invaluable for these young players. We've fought many battles together on the field, and I’m confident that we’ll bring that same synergy and commitment as coaches. Our goal is to nurture a squad that can make the country proud.”
