Hamilton gets surprise win in F1 Italian GP, extends lead over Vettel

Lewis Hamilton claimed a dramatic victory at the Formula One Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, beating Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in the closing stages to strengthen his position at the top of the 2018 drivers' championship.

The Mercedes driver started third on the grid but quickly moved ahead of title rival Sebastian Vettel, who finished only fourth after an early collision with Hamilton. Raikkonen, who started from pole position, led for most of the race before Hamilton finally overtook him with eight laps remaining.

Hamilton praised Ferrari for putting up a strong challenge after securing his sixth victory of the season.

"I want to give it up to Ferrari, who put up a great challenge and gave us a great fight. I want to thank the guys here and everyone back home; without their belief, it wouldn't have been possible," Hamilton said.

Raikkonen finished second, 8.705 seconds behind Hamilton, while Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas completed the podium in third.

The result proved particularly valuable for Hamilton in the championship battle. His sixth win of the season increased his advantage over Vettel to 30 points in the 2018 drivers' standings, strengthening his bid for a fifth world title.

The race turned against Vettel almost immediately. Hamilton and the Ferrari driver made contact on the opening lap, forcing Vettel into a spin and leaving him to recover from the back of the field. He eventually fought his way back to fourth place.

Raikkonen held the lead until his first pit stop on lap 20. Hamilton stayed out longer and stopped on lap 28, returning to the track behind Bottas and Raikkonen.

Bottas made his pit stop on lap 36, handing the lead back to Raikkonen. Hamilton then steadily closed the gap before making the decisive move on lap 45 to take the lead.

The victory was Hamilton's fifth at the historic Monza circuit, a track traditionally associated with Ferrari and one of the most passionate fan bases in Formula One.

Raikkonen said Ferrari had the pace to challenge Mercedes but lost ground after his rear tyres deteriorated.

"I think we were quick enough, but our rear tires went and it was a losing battle from that point," he said.

The race was also disappointing for McLaren's Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion retired on lap 10 because of an engine problem, marking his fifth retirement of the season and his second consecutive failure to finish a race.

With the championship battle intensifying, Hamilton's Monza victory gave Mercedes a major boost while putting additional pressure on Vettel and Ferrari heading into the remaining races of the season.
