New Delhi: Several WhatsApp users have reported that their accounts were unexpectedly placed "under review," leaving them unable to access key features of the messaging app for up to 24 hours.
The issue surfaced on Monday evening, with affected users receiving a notification stating that WhatsApp was reviewing their account activity and device information to ensure compliance with its Terms of Service.
The message read: "Account in review. Date requested: 3 Aug 2026. Your account activity and device info is being checked to make sure it follows our Terms of Service. We will notify you of the result, typically within 24 hours."
Users were also directed to a "Learn about account issues" section, which offers information on responsible use of the platform, as well as guidance on stolen devices and compromised accounts.
Many users took to X to express frustration over the sudden restriction, claiming they had received no prior warning before their accounts were flagged.

One user wrote, "My WhatsApp account has been disabled without any explanation. I have already submitted an appeal, but the review page only displays a generic message stating that it will typically be reviewed within 24 hours. Help me urgently."
Another user, Saloni, posted, "My WhatsApp account was suddenly disabled without any warning. I only use the official app, and my work depends on WhatsApp. Please help. This was so unnecessary."
The reports come weeks after discussions emerged over potential changes to the regulation of messaging platforms in India. In July, reports indicated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) was considering a uniform regulatory framework for messaging services following concerns over WhatsApp's proposed username feature, which would allow users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers.
As of now, WhatsApp has not issued an official statement explaining the reported account review issue.
