India Unveils First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train, Paving Way for Zero-Emission Rail Travel

New Delhi: India has taken a significant leap towards cleaner and greener transportation with the development of its first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell train. The milestone marks the beginning of a domestic hydrogen-powered rail ecosystem and strengthens the country's push towards sustainable mobility.

The hydrogen-powered train has been developed using indigenous technology and will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route under Northern Railway. Designed to accommodate up to 2,600 passengers, it is expected to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains.

The train is powered by a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), which generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen across a proton-conducting Perfluorosulfonic Acid (PFSA) polymer membrane. Unlike diesel engines, the system emits only water vapour and heat, making it a completely zero-emission mode of transport.

With an operational speed of 75 kmph and a design speed of 110 kmph, the train is well-suited for regional passenger services while helping reduce carbon emissions.

To support its operations, Indian Railways has established a dedicated hydrogen refuelling facility at Jind in Haryana. The infrastructure includes hydrogen production, storage, compression and dispensing systems, creating a complete ecosystem for hydrogen-powered rail services.

Safety has been a key priority in the project. The train is equipped with advanced hydrogen leak detection systems capable of identifying even the smallest leaks in real time, ensuring safe and reliable operations.

Beyond being a technological achievement, the indigenous hydrogen fuel cell train lays the groundwork for a future hydrogen rail network in India. It reflects the country's commitment to adopting clean energy solutions and advancing zero-emission public transportation.
