SAIL Supplies 4,000 Tonnes of Steel for INS Taragiri Warship

New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has contributed significantly to India’s defence manufacturing by supplying around 4,000 tonnes of special-grade steel for the construction of INS Taragiri, the fourth stealth frigate under Project 17A.

The 6,670-tonne warship was recently commissioned into the Indian Navy in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam.

Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, INS Taragiri is equipped with advanced stealth features and is capable of handling multiple operational roles.

SAIL stated that the steel used in the warship was produced across its plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela, highlighting the company’s expertise in manufacturing high-grade defence materials.

With more than 75 percent indigenous content, INS Taragiri is fitted with cutting-edge systems, including radar, sonar, and missile platforms such as the BrahMos and surface-to-air missiles, strengthening its combat and maritime security capabilities.

Speaking at the commissioning, Rajnath Singh described the warship as a symbol of India’s growing technological strength and self-reliance in defence production. He also emphasized the importance of a strong naval force, given the country’s reliance on maritime trade and energy routes.

The frigate is designed for sustained high-speed operations and long deployments at sea. It can undertake a wide range of missions, including high-intensity combat, anti-piracy operations, coastal surveillance, and humanitarian assistance.

SAIL has previously supplied specialised steel for major naval platforms, including INS Vikrant and other vessels under Project 17A.

The commissioning of INS Taragiri marks another step forward in India’s push towards defence indigenisation and enhanced maritime strength.

Meanwhile, shares of SAIL closed about 1 percent lower at Rs 154.40 on the National Stock Exchange of India on Thursday.
