New Delhi: The Government of India is taking significant steps to position the country as a global leader in next-generation communication technologies, according to official data released on Sunday.
Building on the rapid rollout and strong adoption of 5G services, the government has now turned its focus toward developing 6G technology under the “Bharat 6G Vision”—an ambitious initiative aimed at making India a hub for advanced telecom innovation by 2030.
According to officials, India’s 6G roadmap is built on three core principles: affordability, sustainability, and universal access. The objective is to ensure that every citizen benefits from ultra-high-speed connectivity while fostering indigenous research, innovation, and global collaboration.
The 6G initiative is also aligned with India’s long-term goal of achieving “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047.
Sixth-generation or 6G technology represents the next leap in wireless communication, expected to be up to 1,000 times faster than 5G with near-zero latency. Such capabilities will enable groundbreaking applications like remote surgeries, advanced robotics, smart cities, and immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences.
To accelerate progress in this domain, the government has established two advanced testbeds — the 6G Terahertz (THz) Testbed and the Advanced Optical Communication Testbed — to drive research and innovation.
Additionally, 100 5G labs have been set up in universities and research institutions across India to build a strong foundation for 6G and encourage collaboration between academia and industry.
So far, 104 research proposals related to 6G network ecosystems have been approved, aligning India’s R&D roadmap with global 6G development efforts.
To promote indigenous research, the government has also launched the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), under which 115 projects worth over ?310 crore have already been approved, covering both 5G and 6G technologies.
A key step toward realizing this vision is the formation of the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) — a collaborative platform that brings together the government, industry, academia, and research institutions. The alliance aims to create a self-reliant and globally competitive ecosystem for advanced telecom technologies, paving the way for India’s leadership in the 6G era.
