New Delhi- AIIMS New Delhi has introduced the da Vinci Surgical robot from US-based Intuitive, marking the launch of the first robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) training facility in a government medical college in India.
The move follows an MoU signed last year between AIIMS and Intuitive to set up a dedicated training centre for robotic-assisted surgery at the institute.
Installed at the Skill, Simulation, Endoscopy, and Training (SET) facility, the da Vinci system will allow surgeons to gain advanced skills in robotic-assisted procedures across multiple specialities, including urology, gynaecology, and general surgery.
Highlighting its significance, AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas said: “With this training centre, AIIMS Delhi is reinforcing its leadership in advancing surgical education and innovation. The demand for precision-driven technologies like robotic-assisted surgery is growing in India. By equipping surgeons with advanced skills, this centre will help enhance surgical precision, reduce recovery times, and improve patient care nationwide.”
The collaboration aims to bridge the training gap for resident surgeons, who often have limited exposure compared to practicing surgeons. Intuitive’s education ecosystem will support trainees with structured learning modules and digital platforms.
Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager of Intuitive India, added: “The training facility at AIIMS Delhi represents a major milestone in strengthening India’s surgical robotics ecosystem. By collaborating with a premier academic institute, we are enabling both surgeons and residents to train on the da Vinci platform.”
The program offers a stepwise pathway, where trainees start by assisting in procedures before moving to supervised, hands-on operations. Structured training protocols developed by AIIMS will ensure quality, consistency, and safety in skill development.
