10 Years of Digital India: Key Milestones and How It Created Countless Opportunities

New Delhi — As the Modi government’s flagship Digital India initiative completes 10 years, the nation has witnessed remarkable, transformative progress, making technology accessible, affordable, and an essential part of daily life for millions.

Launched in 2015, the Digital India mission began at a time when internet penetration was limited, digital literacy was low, and most government services were paper-based. Today, the country's digital landscape has grown by leaps and bounds, positioning India as a global technology powerhouse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also marked the occasion, stating that the next decade will be even more revolutionary as India transitions from digital governance to becoming a leader in global digital innovation — evolving from “India-First” to “India-For-The-World.”

Highlights of Digital India’s Journey:

India’s digital revolution initially faced skepticism, but a decade later, the country has emerged as a global leader in digital governance. India's success in real-time digital payments and rapid 5G deployment has attracted worldwide recognition.

  • World's Fastest 5G Rollout: India now covers 95% of its population with 5G connectivity, surpassing regions like Europe, Latin America, and Africa in terms of rollout speed.

  • Most Affordable Internet: India offers the world’s cheapest internet, with data prices as low as Rs 10 per GB. Affordable internet has become a reality even in rural and remote areas, bridging the digital divide.

  • Global Leader in Real-Time Digital Transactions: Nearly half of all real-time digital payments worldwide are processed in India each month, cementing the country's position at the forefront of digital financial services.

  • Massive Optical Fibre Network: Over 4.2 million route kilometres of optical fibre have been laid across the country, connecting everything from metro cities to the most remote villages and enabling robust e-Governance infrastructure.

  • World’s Largest Digital Health Ecosystem: With over 78 crore (780 million) Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) created, India is building the largest digital health system in the world, offering secure and accessible healthcare records for its citizens.

As India celebrates 10 years of Digital India, the nation looks ahead with confidence, ready to scale new heights in technology, innovation, and digital inclusion.
