New Delhi – Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the Gemini app has now crossed 400 million monthly active users, with significant growth and user engagement, especially driven by the Gemini 2.5 series of AI models.
Speaking at the Google I/O 2025 conference in the US, Pichai shared that more than seven million developers are currently building with Gemini—five times the number from the same time last year. Usage of Gemini on Google’s Vertex AI platform has also surged, increasing by 40 times.
“For users of Gemini 2.5 Pro within the app, engagement has risen by 45 per cent,” Pichai said.
He also highlighted the exponential growth in AI data processing: “A year ago, we were processing 9.7 trillion tokens per month across our products and APIs. Today, that number has soared to over 480 trillion—a fiftyfold increase.”
Pichai emphasized that this progress marks a new phase in the evolution of AI: “We are now in a transformative period of the AI platform shift, where decades of research are being realized and applied by people, businesses, and communities across the globe.”
Since its launch last year, AI Overviews have expanded to over 1.5 billion users across 200 countries and territories.
“In key markets like the U.S. and India, AI Overviews are driving more than 10 per cent growth in query types that feature them, and this growth continues to accelerate,” Pichai noted.
To further enhance the user experience, Google is introducing an all-new AI Mode for Search—a comprehensive reimagining of how search works.
“With advanced reasoning capabilities, AI Mode allows users to pose longer, more complex queries. In early testing, we’ve seen users submit queries two to three times longer than traditional ones, along with follow-up questions for deeper engagement,” he said.
Pichai announced that AI Mode is now available to all users in the U.S. starting today (Tuesday, U.S. time). Powered by the latest Gemini models, the AI responses are faster and more accurate, matching the high standards users expect from Google Search.
Additionally, Gemini 2.5 is rolling out to Search in the U.S. this week. The company is also enhancing Gemini 2.5 Pro with a new Deep Think mode, designed to elevate reasoning capabilities through advanced research and parallel thinking techniques.
