Jaipur — Health authorities have suspended the use of 25 medicines, injections and intravenous (IV) fluids, including those administered during Caesarean deliveries at Paota District Hospital in Jodhpur, after eight women developed serious complications following childbirth.
Officials have collected samples of all medicines and consumables used in the affected cases and sent them for laboratory testing. Until the test results are available, the entire stock of these products has been withdrawn from use as a precautionary measure.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the women had been administered Sodium Lactate IV fluid. Hospital authorities said the batch had arrived about a week before the incident and was being used for the first time.

Following the incident, the Medical Department ordered an immediate suspension of the entire batch. An inquiry has been launched at the medical college level, while a team from AIIMS will carry out an independent investigation to determine the cause of the complications.
The women underwent Caesarean deliveries at Paota District Hospital on June 20. Shortly after surgery, several patients developed severe medical complications, prompting an emergency response.
Jodhpur District Collector Alok Ranjan inspected the hospital's medicine store and chaired a review meeting with senior health officials, including Dr B.S. Jodha, Principal of Dr S.N. Medical College; Dr Kulbir Chopra, Principal Medical Officer of Paota District Hospital; Dr Vikas Rajpurohit, Superintendent of MDM Hospital; and Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr S.S. Shekhawat.
Dr Kulbir Chopra said Sodium Lactate IV fluid is routinely administered before and after Caesarean deliveries and is commonly used during other surgical procedures as well. He added that all other medicines and treatment protocols followed in these cases were standard and unchanged.
According to hospital officials, six of the eight affected women are now stable and recovering. However, two patients, identified as Lalita and Sonal, developed severe complications, including kidney impairment, and required dialysis. Both have since been referred to AIIMS for specialised treatment.

Family members of the patients have demanded a thorough investigation, alleging that the women experienced excessive bleeding, reduced urine output and other serious complications soon after delivery.
Meanwhile, authorities have suspended all surgical procedures at Paota District Hospital until reports on the medicines, consumables and operation theatre environment are received. Patients requiring surgery are being referred to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital.
Health officials said the exact cause of the complications will be determined only after the investigation and laboratory analysis are completed.
