Former Bengal Minister Udayan Guha Arrested, Third Ex-TMC Minister Held Since BJP Took Office

Kolkata: Former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Udayan Guha was arrested from his Phoolbagan residence in Kolkata on Wednesday, becoming the third member of the previous Mamata Banerjee cabinet to be taken into custody since the BJP government assumed power in the state last month.

While police are yet to officially disclose the charges against Guha, sources said his arrest is linked to cases registered over the alleged post-poll violence that followed the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections in Cooch Behar district, his political stronghold.

According to sources, investigators had been trying to locate Guha for some time before arresting him on Wednesday. A senior police source said he is accused of involvement in incidents of violence that erupted after the 2021 Assembly polls, which returned Mamata Banerjee to power for a third consecutive term.

Guha's arrest marks the latest in a series of actions against former ministers of the previous TMC government following the formation of the BJP government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on May 9.

Former Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose was the first ex-minister to be arrested after the change in government. He was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last month in connection with the alleged multi-crore municipalities recruitment scam.

On June 9, former Correctional Services Minister Ujjal Biswas was arrested on allegations of illegally hoarding government relief materials.

With Guha's arrest, the number of former ministers from the previous TMC cabinet currently facing legal action has risen to three.

Udayan Guha is the son of late Kamal Guha, a veteran All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) leader from Cooch Behar who served as a minister in the Left Front government for more than two decades.

Guha entered electoral politics on an AIFB ticket and was first elected as the MLA from the Dinhata Assembly constituency in 2011. Ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections, he joined the Trinamool Congress and retained the seat under the party's banner.

He represented Dinhata until the 2026 Assembly elections, when he was defeated by BJP candidate Ajay Ray by a margin of more than 17,000 votes.
