Bengal Assembly Dissolved, Mamata Still Describes Herself as CM on Social Media

Kolkata- Mamata Banerjee officially ceased to be the Chief Minister of West Bengal after Governor R. N. Ravi announced the dissolution of the state Legislative Assembly on Thursday evening, bringing the Trinamool Congress-led Cabinet to an automatic end.

Despite this, Mamata Banerjee’s official profiles on both X and Facebook continued to describe her as the “Chief Minister of West Bengal.”

The “About” sections on her social media accounts still identify her as: “Founder Chairperson All India Trinamool Congress. Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal.”

Her stance appears consistent with remarks she made during a press conference on May 5, a day after the results of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections were declared.

The elections resulted in a sweeping victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress in the state.

At that press conference, Mamata Banerjee said she would not follow the traditional practice of submitting her resignation to the Governor, claiming that the official election outcome did not reflect the actual public mandate.

Her comments also indicated that she was unwilling to accept either her party’s statewide defeat or her own electoral loss from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency.

In Bhabanipur, she was defeated by Suvendu Adhikari, the outgoing Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.

The developments have drawn comparisons with the conduct of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee after the 2011 Assembly election defeat of the CPI(M)-led Left Front government.

On May 13, 2011, even before the official declaration of final results, Bhattacharjee visited Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to then Governor M. K. Narayanan once it became clear that the 34-year Left Front rule was ending.

According to accounts from that period, Bhattacharjee arrived at Raj Bhavan in the official bulletproof vehicle assigned to the Chief Minister but returned in a party vehicle provided by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) after stepping down.

He also reportedly thanked his security personnel for their service and requested them not to continue with his security duties afterward.

Union Minister of State and former Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also referenced Bhattacharjee’s conduct while criticising Mamata Banerjee’s current stance.

“There cannot be any comparison between Late Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Mamata Banerjee. Despite differences in political ideology, I have no hesitation in admitting that Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was a man of impeccable honesty and integrity,” Majumdar said.
