
Guwahati — Early counting trends in Assam indicate a mixed start for major political players, with key contests drawing close attention.
In the Jorhat Assembly constituency, Gaurav Gogoi of the Indian National Congress is trailing behind Hitendra Nath Goswami of the Bharatiya Janata Party after the first round of counting. Goswami has secured 4,993 votes, leading Gogoi—who has polled 3,937 votes—by a margin of 1,056 votes. With only one of 14 rounds completed, the lead remains tentative and subject to change.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is off to a strong start, leading from the Jalukbari constituency, providing an early advantage to the ruling alliance.
Statewide trends show the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead in around 80 Assembly seats, while the Congress-led opposition bloc is leading in 26 constituencies in the initial rounds.
The elections, held on April 9, recorded a high voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate exceeding 2.5 crore. A total of 722 candidates are contesting, including 59 women.
In terms of participation, the Congress fielded the highest number of candidates (99), followed by the BJP (90). Other key players include the All India United Democratic Front (30 seats), Asom Gana Parishad (26), and Bodo Peoples' Front (11).
Among opposition allies and smaller parties, Raijor Dal fielded 13 candidates, Assam Jatiya Parishad 10, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) three. Other participants include the Aam Aadmi Party and United People's Party Liberal with 18 seats each, the All India Trinamool Congress with 22, and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha with 16 seats. Additionally, 258 Independent candidates are in the fray.
As counting progresses through multiple rounds, the early leads are expected to shift, keeping the political landscape fluid throughout the day.
