MHA Revokes NSA Detention of Ladakhi Activist Sonam Wangchuk

Jammu: The Ministry of Home Affairs, India (MHA) on Saturday revoked the detention of Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) with immediate effect.

In a statement, the ministry said the decision was taken after due consideration, reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh while encouraging constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.

The MHA noted that Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, following a serious law-and-order situation that arose in the town of Leh on September 24, 2025. The detention was ordered by the District Magistrate of Leh under provisions of the National Security Act to maintain public order.

According to the ministry, the activist has already served nearly half of the detention period permitted under the law.

The government also said it has been engaging with various community leaders and stakeholders in Ladakh to address the region’s concerns and aspirations. However, it noted that ongoing bandhs and protests had disrupted normal life and negatively impacted several sectors, including students, job seekers, businesses, tour operators and tourists, affecting the local economy.

Reaffirming its position, the government said it remains committed to creating conditions that support dialogue and resolution of regional issues through constructive engagement.

The ministry also expressed hope that the concerns of the people of Ladakh would be resolved through discussions under mechanisms such as the High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms.
