Tamil Nadu: 12 Dead, 40 Injured as Government Buses Collide Head-On in Sivaganga

Chennai- In a tragic incident near Kummangudi, close to Kundrakkudi in Sivaganga district, at least 12 people were killed and more than 40 injured after two Tamil Nadu government buses collided head-on on Sunday evening.

The crash was so powerful that several passengers died instantly, while many others were trapped inside the twisted remains of the buses. Local residents rushed to the spot and assisted police in rescuing the injured as operations continued late into the night.

Initial reports suggest that both buses were travelling in opposite directions on a narrow stretch of road when they collided. Police are investigating whether over-speeding, low visibility, or driver fatigue played a role in the accident.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Sivaganga and Karaikudi, where many are being treated for serious injuries including fractures, head trauma, and multiple wounds. Several passengers remain in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and devastation — passengers crying for help, glass strewn across the road, and locals breaking bus doors to free those trapped inside. Traffic movement was halted for nearly an hour until police cleared the route.

A Disturbing Pattern in Tamil Nadu

Sunday’s accident adds to the growing number of fatal road crashes in Tamil Nadu. Just days ago, six people — including five women — were killed in another head-on collision between two private buses in Tenkasi district.

Tamil Nadu continues to record one of the highest road accident numbers in India. In 2023, the state reported over 67,000 accidents, accounting for nearly 14% of all road mishaps in the country. While fatalities saw a slight dip in 2025 due to stricter enforcement, major crashes involving buses, trucks, and two-wheelers continue almost daily.

Recent months have seen a spike in fatal accidents across districts like Trichy, Salem, and Villupuram. In one major city, deaths surged sharply between June and July 2025, raising concerns over reckless driving and poor adherence to safety norms.

Last month, a bus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims from Tamil Nadu crashed into a safety railing in Kerala, injuring several people and drawing attention to long-distance driver fatigue.

Renewed Calls for Road Safety Measures

The Sivaganga crash has intensified demands for:

  • Stricter monitoring of government bus operations

  • Regular driver fitness and fatigue checks

  • Improved road engineering in accident-prone areas

  • Tougher penalties for speeding and negligent driving

Police have launched a formal inquiry, while district authorities are preparing a detailed report. Further updates are expected as officials identify the victims and determine the exact cause of the collision.
