Mumbai- A Ganesh immersion procession in Mumbai turned tragic on Sunday when a high-tension wire fell on a trolley carrying devotees, leaving one person dead and five others injured, including two minors, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
The incident occurred during the Gajanan Mitra Mandal’s procession on Khairani Road in Sakinaka. As the trolley reached near Sanman Hotel, six people received an electric shock while trying to lift overhead wires.
The injured were rushed to hospitals. Five of them — Dharmaraj Sukhdev Gupta (49), Aarush Ashok Gupta (6), Tushar Dinesh Gupta (20), Shambhu Navnath Kami (20), and Karan Vinod Kanojia (14) — were admitted to Paramount Hospital and are said to be in stable condition. The sixth victim, identified as 37-year-old Binu Sukumaran, a resident of Gilbert Compound, was taken to Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri (East) where he was declared dead.
This accident adds to a series of mishaps reported across the country during Ganesh immersion festivities this year.
Earlier this week in Karnataka’s Vijayapura, 21-year-old Shivaji alias Shubham Sakpal died on the spot, while two others suffered severe burns after coming into contact with a live wire during idol immersion. In another incident in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari last week, four devotees were killed and one critically injured when a tractor carrying them overturned during Ganesh celebrations.
