Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian athletes for their strong performance at the Asian Games in Jakarta, saying the country's medal tally reflected progress not only in traditional sporting disciplines but also in events where India had struggled in the past.
Speaking during the 47th episode of his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi congratulated the athletes who had already won medals and extended his best wishes to those yet to compete.
"I wish to congratulate all players who have won medals for the country. I extend my best wishes to those players who are yet to compete," he said.
Modi particularly highlighted India's performances in shooting and wrestling, but noted that athletes were also making their mark in disciplines such as Wushu and rowing, where India's record had traditionally been less impressive.
He said the medals represented more than just sporting achievements and demonstrated the determination and confidence of Indian athletes.
The Prime Minister also drew attention to the diversity of India's medal winners, pointing out that a significant number were women and that several young athletes were just 15 or 16 years old.
Another encouraging aspect, he said, was that many of the successful athletes came from small towns and villages rather than only major sporting centres. Their achievements, he added, were the result of sustained hard work and dedication.
The Asian Games performance was therefore emerging as an important indicator of the expanding sporting talent base in India, with athletes from different regions and age groups competing successfully across a wider range of disciplines.
Modi also recalled the upcoming National Sports Day on August 29 and extended his wishes to sports enthusiasts across the country. He paid tribute to legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, whose birth anniversary is observed as National Sports Day.
